Biotechnology is a field of science and industry that uses living organisms, cells, and biological processes to produce useful products and technologies for medicine, agriculture, the food industry, and environmental protection.
The Department of Food Biotechnology was established in 1995.
As of January 5, 2026, due to reorganization, the Department of Food Biotechnology was renamed the Department of Applied Biotechnology, reflecting the expansion of educational and research activities. Applied biotechnology focuses on the practical use of biological processes and technologies to address challenges in industry, medicine, ecology, and agri-biotechnology.
The first heads of the department were Doctor of Chemical Sciences, Professor Kazbek Bekmaganbetovich Yerzhanov, as well as Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Svetlana Sharafeddenovna Khojamuratova, recipient of the state scholarship of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the “Best University Lecturer” state grant; and Z.T. Lesova, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Professor of ATU, recipient of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan’s grant and the “Best University Lecturer – 2010” grant of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Currently, the Department provides training under the three-level education system (Bachelor’s–Master’s–PhD) in the specialty “Biotechnology.” All three levels of the educational program have been accredited by the International Independent Agency for Accreditation and Quality Assurance in Education (NKAOKO). Over the past three years, the “Biotechnology” program has ranked 4th at the Bachelor’s level, 2nd at the Master’s level, and 1st at the PhD level nationwide in the General Ranking of Educational Programs.
